After 15 years of experimentation, we have developed a new method of ocean farming designed to restore ocean ecosystems, mitigate climate change, and create blue-green jobs for fishermen — while providing healthy, local food for communities. GreenWave’s restorative 3D Ocean Farming model was awarded the Buckminster Fuller Prize for ecological design, profiled in the New Yorker (which called our model “the culinary equivalent of the electric car”), and honored by the President Bill Clinton as a keystone of ocean innovation.

  • Create Jobs

    3D Ocean Farms are designed to be replicated. Each new farm requires a minimal initial skill set and low capital costs. Our Farm Startup Program exists to support new farmers from permitting to purchase, and from seed to harvest.

  • Build Infrastructure

    Our restorative hatcheries, seafood hubs, and online resources create a foundation for the emerging blue-green economy and provide the land-based infrastructure necessary to ensure sustainable growth for our new farmers.

  • Market Development

    We work with large-scale institutional buyers and incubate social entrepreneurs to create new and stable markets for our farmers’ crops.

  • Sequester Carbon

    Kelp and other sea vegetables, known as “the Sequoias of the sea,” absorb up to five times the amount of carbon as land-based plants.

  • Rebuild Reef Systems

    3D Ocean Farms rebuild natural reef systems, using native and restorative species, that once protected coastal communities from violent storms, enhancing our resilience to climate-related weather events.

  • Prevent Deadzones

    Oxygen depleted dead zones are a major global crisis, and the main perpetrator is the nitrogen coming from our farms, factories, and homes. 3D Ocean Farms sequester the nitrogen runoff and enable us to capture this valuable resource for use in fertilizer and animal feed.

  • Rearrange the Seafood Plate

    With over 10,000 edible plants in the sea and more of the United States underwater than above, this is our opportunity to rearrange the seafood plate and reduce pressure on fish stocks, with sustainable seagreens in the middle and wild fish at the edges.

  • Zero Input Farming

    The crops we grow require zero fertilizers, freshwater, or antibiotics, making 3D ocean farming the most sustainable form of food production on the planet.

  • Protect the Commons

    3D Ocean Farms are designed to be community spaces where anyone can fish and boat. We must ensure that our oceans remain beautiful and pristine spaces, and communal sources of food.
